Water entry of a falling wedge

Objective

Demonstrate Fugu’s ability to accurately reproduce a strongly coupled fluid/structure interaction benchmark involving water entry.

Simulation setup

The case considers the free fall of a wedge above a water tank. The solid has a square base of 1.2 m × 1.2 m, a deadrise angle of 25°, and a density of 466.6 kg/m³. It is initially released from a height of 1.3 m above the free surface. The tank is 12.0 m long and 2.0 m wide, with a water depth of 1.0 m. The configuration involves a two-phase air/water flow with a free surface, coupled with the motion of the rigid body.

Results

The time evolution of the vertical position and vertical velocity of the wedge is compared with experimental data from Yettou et al., as reported by Pathak and Raessi (2016). The overall good agreement provides strong validation of Fugu’s numerical framework for a strongly coupled water entry problem.
